In the design of modern interiors, including sewing curtains, a wide variety of fabrics are used today. The individual properties of each type of fabric, composition, color, pattern, texture, gloss or dullness of the surface are used by designers to create the desired curtain design and room style.

Let's present the main fabrics most often used in curtain design and textile interior decoration.

Velvet

Velvet is a two-layer fabric with a base and trimmed pile (as opposed to looped pile). The basis of velvet gives the fabric its characteristics, and it can be different: cotton, silk, made of artificial fibers, mixed. Also, velvet can be knitted with a different fiber composition. The pile has a similar composition, but differs in the height and density of the villi.

Cotton velvet is a dense, heavy fabric that creates a feeling of coziness and security, comfort and respectability in the interior. It is an environmentally friendly material.

Velvet with the inclusion of silk thread and velvet on a knitted basis - soft, elastic fabric, perfectly draped and creates the effect of the fluidity of the fabric.

Man-made and blended velvet can have all of the above properties. It can be non-flammable, does not fade in the sun and has a wide variety of textures: mother of pearl, embossing, embroidery, etc. Its disadvantage is high hydroelectricity and cannot be called an environmentally friendly material.

Linen

The material that had once gone out of use returned to us in a new quality. Displaced in previous years by new artificial fabrics, linen re-enters our interiors.

By adding even the smallest percentage of man-made fibers to linen, manufacturers have greatly improved the characteristics of linen. It becomes softer and more elastic, varied in texture. The functional properties of the fabric are also improved - linen does not shrink during washing, does not fade, does not shine.

In the production of curtain fabrics, linen is now very widespread. It is included in curtain fabrics, increasing breathability. Organza is combined with flax, using the unique texture of this fiber.

Almost all Italian collections include linen fabrics. Most often it is linen tulle, which perfectly diffuses sunlight.

Cotton and viscose

These materials are rarely used to sew 100% natural curtains. For curtain fabrics, cotton and viscose are mixed with artificial fibers, which only adds to their positive characteristics.

For example, natural viscose is afraid of water. For viscose only dry cleaning is provided. And when mixed with polyester, the fabric is washable.

Cotton, on the other hand, loves water, but shrinks heavily when washed. In a composition with synthetic fibers, this disadvantage is eliminated.

A very widespread and successful material is cotton satin, which is brought to us mainly from India. There such fabrics are produced in huge quantities and of very good quality. Cotton satin looks great both in curtains and in bedspreads with fine quilting.

There is cotton mixed with flax, with organza thread, with viscose and other synthetic fibers. Its properties are well known to all. It is soft, hygroscopic, easy to care for, hypoallergenic and unconditionally ecological.

Silk

When the word “silk” is pronounced, everyone has a soft, flowing fabric in their minds. But in fact, natural silk has a structure similar to paper, with a pronounced texture. When the silkworm "weaves" its thread, it is uneven, with many tubercles. In Thailand, where the largest producer of silk curtain fabrics (Jim Thompson) is located, they believe that the more textured silk, the more beautiful and emphatically natural.

Curtains made of natural silk must be combined with lining fabric, because silk is afraid of ultraviolet rays, moreover, it is a lighter and more transparent material.

Silk cannot be washed, dry cleaning is preferable, but it does not absorb dust either. this material is slippery and thin.

Designers love natural silk very much. It has a very beautiful texture, subdued soft shine, and it organically fits into almost any interior style.

Wool

Oddly enough, but woolen fibers are also used in the development of curtain fabrics. Spanish designers have released a whole collection with the inclusion of woolen threads. This is also a thread curtain - a product made of separate braided or twisted threads. This is an organza canvas with all kinds of stripes and weaves of woolen threads. This is also linen fabrics that go well with wool inclusions.

This fiber is preferred to use in English fabrics (for example, "plaid"), in accessories (fringe, brushes). And although wool is not very popular in curtain fabrics, it certainly brings variety and unusual texture to the products of this direction.

Artificial fiber

For a long time and firmly entered our life artificial fiber. The most common material in the production of curtain fabrics is polyester. Strength, durability, ease of care and a consistently striking appearance have made polyester very popular.

Manufacturers have learned to masterfully work with this material. What kind of textures have not been developed by designers! Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish natural materials from artificial ones. They complement the natural fibers of fabrics, improving their characteristics, and are used by themselves, imitating cotton and linen, silk and viscose, gold and silver thread.

Studying new collections and entering the textile market, you understand that the possibilities of polyester are endless.

These are non-combustible fabrics, materials with dust and dirt-repelling properties, fabrics that do not transmit light (blackout), specialized fabrics for the street that are not afraid of water or sun, etc.

The variety of types of fabrics at the disposal of our designers provides ample opportunities for using their features to create the desired effect from curtains in accordance with the requirements of the design of the room. You can be sure that the experience of the designers of our curtain design studio will allow you to most accurately select the most suitable fabrics for your curtains.
